I was going to write about New Year’s resolutions but let’s be honest half of you have already fallen off the wagon anyway so there’s no use in wasting time and space here. Anyone who knows me knows that I am critical of racial representation in popular media. I raise a lot of dust anytime […]

“Brooklyn we did it”. Christopher Wallace aka Biggie Smalls, the larger than life hip-hop icon, carried a lot of weight, most of the load he carried was from his corpulent frame, but another portion was from carrying the neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant on his back. As Brooklyn’s unofficial ambassador in the mid-nineties he gave a lot […]

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_CYGMoSYCs Dear Common, Did you seriously say, “I’m a man”?  With a straight face? Generally, I resolve not to make New Year’s resolutions.  That way, I’ve already broken my resolution by day one, and don’t have to spend 364 days talking about how I failed yet again.  Since I’d rather watch football than go see […]

For many Christians around the world, the Christmas season signals a time to remember the Immaculate Conception of Mary of Nazareth and the birth of Jesus Christ. It is a time to remember when hope in the form of a baby boy came into the world. You see, when I was a little Pentecostal black […]

I read the New York Times article titled “Food Stamps Usage Soars, Stigma Fades.” The article is about the lessening of  stigma regarding the use of food stamps. What comes to mind when you think of the U.S. welfare system, specifically food stamps or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)?  For me, I remember seeing black single mothers with multiple […]

When most people think of Christmas they usually envision images of an older, portly, White man in a hot, itchy red costume, encouraging children to sit on his lap while desperately trying to not look like a pedophile. Others may think of a grandmother getting trampled in Best Buy because she did not move fast […]

I love sports. But I don’t necessarily love athletes. If it isn’t Tiger’s melodrama, it is Dwight Howard’s attempts to sue the mother of his child for posting pictures of their son on Twitter or his banning her from speaking his name (who does he think he is? Voldemort?!)

Like most people who do not live in the same city with their biological family I look forward to the Christmas’ holiday with sheer delight and seethed dread. Yes, I use the five letter word dread because it seems as if all the unfinished family’s drama from the previous year is dysfunctionally packed away in […]

Lies changed my outlook on important figures in history and seemed to always paint America as the hero/peace maker, when many times the leaders of this country were the main perpetrators and oppressors. Some students in some neighborhoods don’t have history books to lie to them, or any books for that matter. I want to […]

Is a half-truth a whole lie? When looking back over my 6 years elementary school, 3 years of middle school, and 4 years of high school, I realized that not once did my classes teach me about any gay or lesbian figure in history. As a matter of a fact, if it is public education’s […]
