Straight black men dominate the rap industry. Surprise! But to what extent does this male-dominated field marginalize other groups from entering into this lucrative industry? While the industry has made some room for empowered, tough black women- Nicki Minaj, Azealia Banks, Angel Haze, to name a few- one group has been marginalized almost entirely: gay […]
30 Years After Vanessa’s Crown: How Far Have We Really Come?
In light of the recent stupid controversy surrounding Miss America 2014’s Nina Davuluri, I decided to ponder race relations in the context of beauty pageants and American society.

What Shall I Tell My Children Who Are Black: Don Lemon, the Politics of Image, and the Stench of Respectability
“What shall I tell my children who are black, of what it means to be a captive in this dark skin? What shall I tell my dear one, fruit of my womb, of how beautiful they are when everywhere they turn they are faced with abhorrence of everything that is black. To All Afraid of the ‘Ghetto’
I cannot count the number of times I have heard comments equating majority poor black neighborhoods (“ghettos”) with exponential violence this week. Most, however, do not understand the clear problems with these statements. While the majority of these comments are from my classmates at the University of Chicago- a school that actively others the surrounding […]
She Got Game: On The W’s Rookie Class
I was wrong. Really wrong. Wrong as LL and Brad Paisley’s solution for solving racism (aka Obama’s Race Speech: The Musical). Wrong as my desire to hear Stacey Dash on that remix. I got it wrong. Really wrong. Last year around this time, I predicted that Notre Dame’s Skylar Diggins would more than likely be […]

The President’s visit was one moment in a longer struggle to radically improve the lives of black and Latino youth. Now that the President has come and gone we all have work to do!
Nicki Minaj Calls Steven Tyler’s American Idol Criticism RACIST
Nicki Minaj says Steven Tyler’s recent criticism of her ability to be a judge on American Idol is racist. Tyler says Nicki is ill-equipped to judge, and would have kicked Bob Dylan off the show. Is that assumption racist? Does Nicki have what it takes to judge Idol?
