North Miami Beach Police Using Black Men’s Mugshots as Target Practice
A member of the National Guard was shocked when she went to a local range for target practice.
Valerie Deant and other members of the National Guard came upon mug shots of black men that had been used by North Miami police just moments before. It was even more distressing for Deant as one of the photos was picture of her brother Woody. Woody was 18 at the time of arrest in connection with a drag race.
“I was like ‘why is my brother being used for target practice?'” Deant told NBC.
Deant called her brother immediately.
“The picture actually has like bullet holes. One in my forehead and one in my eye. …I was speechless,” Willy Deant told the news station.
The police department, is taking no action against the officers involved. North Miami Beach Police Chief J. Scott Dennis noted that the officers could have used better judgment, but he denies any racial profiling took place.
“Our policies were not violated. There is no discipline forthcoming from the individuals who were involved with this,” Dennis said.
Perhaps that’s the problem.
