Update: Eric Garner’s daughter, Erica, has released a statement regarding the Justice Department’s decision to switch the investigation team.

Eric Garner was killed on a street corner in New York City more than two years ago when an NYPD officer placed him in an unlawful chokehold. The investigation into the incident has been ongoing since and has barely bore any fruit.

However, the Justice Department’s recent decision to switch out the New York-based FBI investigators with a new team from Washington D.C. already appears to be changing that.

According to the New York Post, an anonymous law enforcement source says that charges are likely to be brought against Officer Daniel Pantaleo.

“It’s going to happen sooner than later,” the source said. “Washington wants to indict him.”

An indictment would surely be a step int he right direction. But matters in this case have already gone so far in the wrong direction – with Pantaleo remaining on the force and making $100,000 through overtime and bonuses.

Eric Garner was killed in July 2014. There’s no telling how long it will take for any justice to be served, given the current pace of the proceedings.
