Last week, news broke that tennis star Maria Sharapova was found to be doping, meaning she has been taking illegal performance enhancing drugs. All this has transpired while the pretty, tall, thin, white athlete and spokesmodel has been playing professional tennis. Most news outlets are describing the issue as Sharapova having “failed a drug test” at the Australian Open. But, what many seem unwilling to say is that Sharapova has been using a known performance enhancing drug for ten years meanwhile, Serena Williams has been maligned, speculated about, and undermined as an athlete without failing any drug tests her entire career. This story is the literal embodiment of white privilege which is why the media doesn’t want to frame it that way.
Acknowledging that white privilege – the process where white people naturally gain a series of advantages over minorities due to their race – is hard enough for some people. But if they’re fortunate enough to do that, the next step is identifying examples of white privilege in everyday life.
The Chicago Theological Seminary is working on a campaign to held address issues that are standing in the way of social justice, including white privilege. In a new video entitled “White Privilege Glasses,” a white man is given a pair of glasses that provide him with the ability to see what life is like for people of color in day-to-day interactions.

In December 2013, news broke that a young, well-to-do 16-year-old White male named Ethan Couch had been sentenced to probation after mowing down four people in a drunken stupor, killing them all and injuring two others. The claim: he suffered from something called “affluenza” – a problem which kept him from truly understanding the consequences of his actions because he had grown up never really having to answer for anything. Now, Couch is defying those orders and evading capture by police, and even the FBI and US Marshals. Oddly though, there seems to be a deafening silence coming from all those people shouting “all lives matter” at the protestors and demonstrators all over this country who have been speaking out against the murders of innocent Black and Brown people. I wonder why…
A study has proven what we already knew to be true — white privilege exists. Water is also wet.
From the New York Times:
As they describe in two working papers, Redzo Mujcic and Paul Frijters, economists at the University of Queensland, trained and assigned 29 young adult testers (from both genders and different ethnic groups) to board public buses in Brisbane and insert an empty fare card into the bus scanner. After the scanner made a loud sound informing the driver that the card did not have enough value, the testers said, “I do not have any money, but I need to get to” a station about 1.2 miles away. (The station varied according to where the testers boarded.)
With more than 1,500 observations, the study uncovered substantial, statistically significant race discrimination. Bus drivers were twice as willing to let white testers ride free as black testers (72 percent versus 36 percent of the time). Bus drivers showed some relative favoritism toward testers who shared their own race, but even black drivers still favored white testers over black testers (allowing free rides 83 percent versus 68 percent of the time).
The study also found that racial disparities persisted when the testers wore business attire or dressed in army uniforms. For example, testers wearing army uniforms were allowed to ride free 97 percent of the time if they were white, but only 77 percent of the time if they were black.
